Cone, Mineral Oil, Petro Free Products that are NOT Online
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:17:09 pm »
I don't know if this has been started before, but I would like everyone to list their cone free, mineral oil free, petro free favorite local BSS/walmart/drugstore/homemade products here.  I would start, but I don't have any and I'm looking to try some.  As my hair gets longer it's going to get more expensive to upkeep, especially given that it's so thick.  So if anyone has any they would like to add, let's start this up!

Also, please note if they have protein in them and what kind.  Am I asking too much :)

Now Bubbles, You know there are like 5 of these topics.  What you mean "  I don't know if this has been started before!"

I'm having all the luck in the world w shealoe, but I bought it online! :lmao:

But, I totally feel you sis.  It's gotten to the point where the only thing I need online is Elucence.  Everything else is optional.  So far, my best offline finds are:

Devacurl One C (adimethicone )
Africa's Best Ultimate Herbal Oil w Ginseng
Organics Texture my way Curl Keeper Hair Lotion (dimethicone way down)
Giovanni Direct
Trader Joes Nourish
Creme of Nature Shampoo
Back 2 Basics Apple Ginseng Volumizing Shampoo
V05/Suave
Honey/Olive Oil/Coconut Milk

LOL no I know there are product topics that have been started.  But when I check the ingredients for some products that folks recommend offline, mineral oil is like the third on the list with cones checking in at fourth.  I'm just trying to keep it specific :)

Conditioners -

All the Suave Naturals Condishes: A small (8oz?) bottle is less than $1 at Walmart and probably less than $1.50 at drugstores. I have the Tropical Coconut, Milk & Honey and the Toasted Vanilla & Sugar. (Haven't bought the Stawberry yet - but may later.) They are light and smell yummy. They may be a bit too light for winter. (I'm looking for something thicker, now.) You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login

Lustrasilk Shea Butter Cholesterol Plus: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . A 20 oz tub is about $3 - I think... This one is a thicker type condish. Smells fruity/floral. (I used this one to coat my length, while I applied dandruff shampoo to my scalp. It saved my hair from drying out due to the harsh ingredients in the poo. I've also used it as a DT - with and without heat.) It's got mango and cholesterol in it. I don't know if cholesterol is CG-friendly though.... The other condishes in that line do contain mineral oil!

Ion Volumizing Solutions Vitalizing Thickening Conditioner: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . This one is about $4.50 (with Sallys' Card discount.) Smells nicely - kind of minty.  It's a nice condish....but contains Hydrolized Rice Protein and Wheat Amino Acids. (I switch it out after 2-3 weeks to avoid possible build-up or protein stiffness.)

Ion Volumizing Solutions Vitalizing Fortifying Treatment: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . $4.50 for 8 oz spray (with Sally's Card discount.) I have used this occassionally as a leave-in, in the past. (Not using it currently. No specific reason why... just wanted to try other things.) Smells nicely - kind of minty.  Contains PVP (for hold) and castor oil! Also contains Hydrolized Rice and Wheat Proteins, Keratin Proteins & Amino Acids, Silk and Wheat Amino Acids and Lactic Acids. (Uff... that was a long a$$ listing.)

Homemade DT's (packs/masks) -  :stir:

Mayo Pack: 1/4 - 1/2 cup  Organic mayo from health food store - add a few drops of fragrance or EO (optional.)  --- Apply to hair - place plastic/shower cap over hair - leave in for 15 - 30 min, NO HEAT - rinse with the coolest water you can stand (egg in pack can curdle if water is too warm/hot) - shampoo/co-wash or co-rinse.

Avocado Pack: 1/2 - 1 ripe (soft) avocado, 2 tsp jojoba oil (or any other oil.) Mash avocado with fork - add the oil and mix well.  --- Apply to hair - place plastic/shower cap over hair - leave in for 15 - 30 min, NO HEAT - rinse with cool to tepid water - shampoo/co-wash or co-rinse optional.

Banana Avocado Pack: 1/2 ripe (soft) avocado, 1/2 -3/4 small ripe (VERY SOFT) banana, 1 tsp of honey or molasses, 2 tsp jojoba (or other oil.) Mash avocado and banana SEPERATELY.  Mix the 2 together into one smooth paste. Add the oil and honey/molasses and mix well. --- Apply to hair - place plastic/shower cap over hair - leave in for 15 - 30 min, NO HEAT - rinse with cool to tepid water - shampoo/co-wash, co-rinse or ACV rinse to remove the (small amount of) starch from the banana! Make sure the banana is really finely mashed or you'll have banana chunks stuck in your hair that won't wash out well! Just in case that happens (it did to me, the first time I tried this!! ::) ) rinse out as well as you can, with cool to tepid water. Then apply a ton of condish and (using a Denman-type brush or a rake comb) carefully brush through  - rinsing the brush frequently (to remove banana goo from it) until no more banana is visible in your hair (and the brush). This looks like a lot of trouble, but it's well worth it. This pack makes my hair feel soft and nourished and it smells yummy.  :ten:
BTW I prefer molasses over honey. My hair is color-treated (dark auburn) and honey has a tendency to lighten hair. Molasses are better for color-treated hair that you want to remain dark(er.)

Banana Honey Pack: 1 ripe (VERY SOFT) small to medium banana, 1 tbsp honey/molasses (reason above,) 1 - 1 1/2 tsp jojoba (or other oil.) Mash banana well into a SMOOTH paste. Add the oil and honey/molasses and mix well. --- Apply to hair - place plastic/shower cap over hair - leave in for 15 - 30 min, NO HEAT - rinse with cool to tepid water - shampoo/co-wash or co-rinse to remove the (small amount of) starch from the banana! (No ACV rinse here, or too much of the sugars form the honey/molasses will be removed.) Warnings, from Banana Avocado Pack above, apply!

Instead of oil (or I make it half and half) I sometimes also add organic coconut milk to any of the packs above.

Gels -

Suave Naturals Aloe Vera Extra Hold Frizz Control Gel: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . About $1 - 2 for a 16oz bottle. Worked for me until it got colder.....

Dove Define & Shine Control Gel: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . About $1.50 (?) for a 6 - 8 (?) oz tube. It's light. I use it ocassionally as a 2nd or 3rd day frizz control gel, mixed with some distilled water. (Spray or scrunch in.)

Styling/Refresher Sprays - (end-of-day, 2nd/3rd day hair)

Beyond The Zone Noodle Head Curl Boosting Spray: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . Got this one as a gift (to try out and review) from the manager of my local Sally's BSS. Smells like coconut creme/Pina Colada - not too strong after it dries. It's a nice refresher/deodorizer. Not much else to say...... (Contains NO CONES unlike the 2 other products in this line!!)

Motions Conditioning Setting Lotion: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . $3.99 for 12 oz spray. It's watery and not really what I would call a lotion. Good for fine hair. Smells light... kind of floral with light fruity undertone. Contains VP/VA and PVP for some hold (like a regular gel.)

Motions Salon Herbals Setting and Styling Lotion: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . $4.99 for 12 oz spray. It's watery and not really what I would call a lotion. Good for fine hair. Smells more fruity (and stronger) than the other Motion item above. Contains VP/VA and PVP for some hold (like a regular gel.) Also contains Lactic Acid, Buttermilk Powder and Hydrolized Soy Protein... but they are toward the end of the list (before the preservatives and fragrance.)

Homemade Lavendar Mist/Refresher Spray: 1 gal distilled water, 10-15 dr of Lavendar EO. Remove 1 glass of water and set aside. Add the drops of Lavendar EO to the jug. Shake well. Add the glass of water back into the jug and shake again. Pour some of the Mist into a sprayer bottle. (I prefer the pump spritz bottle You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login over the trigger spray bottles You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . They - usually - have a finer mist.) I use this mist almost every day, before I apply another light coat of gel or any of the other sprays above.

I hope I didn't give you guys a headache reading all of this.......  :bl:

I also appologize for any spelling mistakes and long sentences. Had a bad hair day today (very windyand cold) and decided to drown my agony in a couple of rum & cokes - out with friends.  :fruitdrink:

JFYI: I have color-treaded, chest length, fine, type 3a/3b hair. I can't guarantee that my suggestions will work for kinkier hair....but they are cheap and may be worth the try.  :alright:

Type 3a/3b BSL, fine, color-treated hair. Naturally curly and happy for about 6+ years.

I am not my hair, I am not my skin - I AM the soul that lives within!

Aaaargh!  :paperbag: I forgot my co-wash.

Nature's Gate Jojoba Condish: About $5-6 at the health food store. Not too thick, no too thin - great to cleanse scalp and hair. The version I have (just bought a new bottle a week ago) does not have cones in it.

Definitely; between those two posts I am outdone! :faint:

I can't believe Spiderlashes said "this is by no means exhaustive"; maybe it ain't, but it's pretty d@mn near!

Here is my own, albeit paltry offering:

Druide Ecological Nourishing Conditioner (A protein treatment)
Druide Styling Gel (light consistency, no plastics)
Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier (rehydrator, detangling spritz)
Taliah Waajid Herbal Enhancing Conditioner (contains small amount of beeswax)

I can't vouch for any of these personally (though I should be able to soon) but they do come highly recommended by some posters with great hair! The first two are from the health food store and the latter two from the BSS. HTH

ETA: I forgot Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee, a firm hold styler available at Sally's

LOL  Believe me, I didn't create this list myself; I just combined three lists out there and added a few extra things of my own.  Most of these products I can't even pronounce let alone have tried!

The place where my list is really lacking is in the styler category, especially curl enhancing/curl defining area.  I hope some people will add to those areas!

Styling Products/gels/leave-ins

ORS Lock & Twist Gel  - I forgot to list this one. Love it! Smells nice too, but can weigh down fine hair is used too much.

most activator gels - Forgot to list another one of mine..... see below.

most regular gels - well..... just watch out for the cones.

Condtioners, Rconstructors and DTs

Suave Naturals Coconut (protein) - Protein is very low on the list.

Suave Naturals M&H (protein) - Protein is very low on the list.

Health food conditioners
Natural Lines/Health Food Store No-Cone Conditioners:

Jason Cosmetics Sea Kelp Conditioner - Has a a cone in it, close to the end of the list. I used this (only once every 8-10 weeks) and loved it. It smells grrrrrrreat. But I'm trying to stay away from cones.

Do you want salon products?  Salon conditioners

Bumble & Bumble Seaweed Conditioner - My salon carries this. They use it on my after a color service. I haven't bought it yet (kind of pricey for over $20 for an 8 oz bottle,) but smells great and makes my hair feel soft.

Bumble & Bumble Creme de Coco - My salon carries this. They use it on my after a color service. I did buy a few bottles of this (ugh!) Kind of pricey though.

Don't really have anything for salon stylers...

I have one, but it's pricey........

Nice list, Spiderlashes5000!!!!

I "updated" a few of them. Hope you don't mind?!  :bl:

I like the Biosilk too. Best hold EVER, but dries crunchy and causes flaking (chunks and spiderwebbing,) if you use a tad bit too much.  It's more obvious on dark hair. I can't find it at my local Sally's but at another BSS and SuperCuts (salon chain.)

Got to add 3 more gels to my list..... I read Spiderlashes5000's post and remembered I had the ORS Lock and Twist Gel..... I went upstaris and dug through my under-sink cabinet and my hall cupboard.  :bunny:

Naturelle Aura Hypo-Allergenic Styling Gel: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . It's $4.50 for 8 oz. Contains several EO's and extracts, but has no scent. Some people did complain of flaking, but I have not had any problems. (I use about 2 quarter-sized blobs for my chest-lenght hair.)

Proclaim Crystal Ice Protein Styling Gel: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . Comes in several sizes. The 6 oz tub, I have (more on that later,) is $1.19. The fragrance is a very light perfumey scent. It claims to be Utra Hold, but I think it's more of a lighter to medium hold.  It's claims of PROTEIN is no big deal. Hydrolized Collagen is mentioned at the bottom of the list (second from last,) after the preservatives and right before (one) color. (The gel is clear - go figure.)

Proclaim Curl & Wave Conditioning Activator Gel: You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . Also comes in several sizes. The 32 oz tub, I have is , is $2.79. Aloe is a major ingredient, while Hydrolized Wheat Protein is  somewhere towards the middle, right before the preservatives and fragrance. Fragrance is a very light perfumey scent.

GUANO but thought to share anyways:

I hate to use hair products in tubs!!! I can't stand the fact that I have to stick my fingers into it - possibly introduce "buggies" and have much of the stuff end up under my (not even that long) fingernails.  :annoyed:

I prefer to use pour or pump bottles. That way, no contamination, no premature drying out and I can monitor my usage better.

I bought some pump bottles at Sally's (You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login) and filled them wit the tub gels (above.) It's a bit messy, if you're clumsy: Take a spoon - scoup the gel from the tub inot a ziplock bag - close the bag - cut one corner off (the bigger the corner cut, the thicker the flow!) - hold the cut corner over the neck of the bottle (or stick it in a bit) and squeeze the gel into the bottle. Stop squeezing occassionally and check that the gel does not get held up in the bottle neck.

Hollywood Beauty Carrot oil creme and Hollywood Beauty Olive Oil Creme are both petro/mineral oil/ and cone free.  I really like too cause they are thick (I apply at night before wrapping up my hair) and my hair is so soft in the am.

Trader Joes Nourish Conditioner is also petro/mineral oil/cone free but it does contain soy protein.

Fantasia IC w/ sparklelights (the clear/white and blue) are also petro/mineral oil/cone free

Smooth and Shine Curl Activator gel as well
extremely thick, kinky, coils and curls that have a mind of thier own.
