Shea Butter
« on: January 21, 2007, 02:42:26 AM »
If used correctly, Shea Butter can be a wonderful thing.  I used to be against it, but I was using it incorrecty.  It gives my hair incredible sheen and moisturizes fantastically.  Look at some of your favorite products, you may find it ;)

5 stars!

Interesting.  It's almost pomade-y to me.  Perhaps using it wrong/too much.  Will check out your comments on it.

I'm all about the shea butter, every since I started using Blended Beauty products.  Most the the BB products are shea based products and they work fabulously.  Now, thanks to Peachtree ( ;)) I've been using it in various hair butters, my favorites being one that works well as sort of a pomade (only butters and oils) and one that works well as a leave-in/styler (includes aloe juice and aloe gel) for the last month.

I have to say, shea butter is the *ish for some afro hair.  I agree, that while there may be people who absolutely HATE shea, more often than not, it's the way it's used.  Maybe some folks can't use it in the same formulations as others, etc.  If it works well on your skin, why not your hair? LOL

And if you make something that comes out too oily (like the trial before my last trial), it's a heavenly skin cream.   ;)

Agreed, hairtwin.

I remember I put some shea butter on my hair real quick the other day. I was in a rush and just slapped some one. And my hair felt WONDERFUL. It was soft and very well moisturized. I think before, I may have been using too much.

I recently started using the Oyin Whipped Pudding which contains shea butter and I have to say that it is one of the best moisturizer I have found during these cold winter months.

Guys, the key to using shea butter is to add oils and liquids and whip it to the consistency you like.  Pure shea won't give the results of let's say shea, aloe, and coconut oil.  Its better for the body in pure form, but for hair, it has to be cut w something.   Think of it like straight vodka vs. a cosmo.

Also, shea is a moisturizer...not a curl definer...well it is, but not in the way you're used to.  Its something that works on damp to dry hair vs. soaking wet.  You just have to  tweak it to decide what's best for you, but thats what I mean by using it correctly.

Just adding that some people DO like straight shea butter in their hair.  I don't, but some do, so, if you try it, you may want to go the easiest route first  :-\

And about the liquids....make sure you don't mix oil and water UNLESS you have an emulsifier for this purpose.  If not, stick to the knowns (shea + aloe or shea + oil + aloe).   Water also decreases the shelf life of the product, so, if you do use water, don't mix a up a ton of product without using a preservative.  NP's homemade products forum is visited by the makers of Oyin and Anita Grant frequently, so, they may be able to give some tips about mixing, perservatives, emulsifiers, etc.

ITA. I looooooove shea butter for my hair AND body. I find it works best, when mixed with a bit of oil or a lfew drops of light condish, as a 2nd/3rd day moisturizer on my dryer ends. A little goes a long way!

I give this 4.5 stars.
