A LI'L COMB COILS TUTORIAL
« on: February 02, 2007, 08:19:14 pm »
Hi LADIES, I stumbled into this information and I thought it might be useful, I did a lot of  comb coils to my daughter as I did  myself at the beginning of my natural journey so  here it is

Instructions on using the new Coil Comb
  FOR TIGHT COILS:

Begin with damp, detangled hair.
Section off hair in layers
Apply generous amounts of gel to layer
Part hair using tail of comb
Grab hair with teeth and begin twisting while pulling away from the scalp (see fig. 1)

 FOR LARGER COILS:

Follow steps 1 through 3 above
Lay the barrel of the Coil Comb flat against the scalp area and wind hair around thick or tapered part of barrel to achieve your desired coil size
Hold coil in place for a moment. While holding coil, simply slide barrel out and release.

Here are the tutorials with Quick time or Windows Media

would comb coils be considered a protective style? Hope that's not a silly question  ;D

Yes; I think they are pretty much like twists in that you style your hair once, eliminating the daily manipulation until the next wash.

Thanks for sharing this *SWEET*, I have been having no luck whatsoever coiling with a regular  tail comb. It's good to see there's an alternative! :D

Just FYI, you can do this really by just twirling the secion of hair starting at the base, if you have enough hair to twirl.

Slightly off topic but are comb coils and twists that small hard to undo?

It's not difficult at all to undo especially when I compare it to cornrows, braids or twists, but you can also choose to make them bigger square/diamond/triangle shapes.

I've done comb coils on my bf with the small end of a comb like this:

My mom uses a comb like this for my coils:

I do think they take some effort to get the coils out, wash/condish etc., but you kind of have to manipulate some of them back out, but nothing like I'd imagine dreads to be.  They are so easy to maintain, you can wear a "coil out" as they start to fuzz at the scalp - thanks for the tutorial, they are so easy (according to my mom) and a nice change from what you might wear on a regular basis!
Natural since Nov 07
