I want to start getting things on ebay,I have seen some really cute stuff. But I'm just so afraid of getting ripped off, and I'm not really sure how ebay works.
I have a confession to make...I bought both my wedding dress and my reception dress on ebay. Wedding dress was Reem Acra, and reception dress A.B.S. (Allen Schwartz)...paid a fraction of the cost for both and literally save thousands...I am a HUGE fan of ebay...patience is a virtue though if you are looking for something specific.
You can always start out by bidding on something small, like a used paperback or a used CD or something. Then if it doesn't work out, you haven't lost much. But you can see sellers' feedback scores and the percentage of positive versus negative feedback they've earned from buyers. If they have a high numbers of feedback and it's over 98.5% positive, chances are, you won't get screwed. And there are ways to get your money back if you do. But some sellers don't like to sell to newbies/first timers because they suspect they're really banned buyers who just created a new account...or they worry that a legitimate newbie may just not "get" it and be too demanding, pestering, etc. So, as a newbie, you'll probably want to contact sellers before bidding on their items, and tell them that you're for real but just inexperienced. Also, starting a PayPal account is a good idea as fewer and fewer sellers still accept money orders and personal checks. A PayPal acct is like an online checking account that you can fund through deposits from a real bank account or a credit card. But sellers will only see the "email address" name of your PayPal account and not any other information. Also, if you use PayPal, it's a lot easier to get your money back if the transaction goes bad.If there's an item you're interested in bidding on on ebay, any of us could help you.
