Who here ebays?
« on: February 19, 2007, 10:58:44 AM »
Any other ebayers in the house?

Any clothing ebayers?  Buying or selling?

If you buy, what have been some of your best "finds?"

If you sell, what was your biggest "woohoo?" (i.e., something that sold for an amount beyond your wildest expectations)

Oh yeah, if you happen to see one of these sweaters at someone's garage sale, do your self a favor AND BUY IT!  OK? ;)

I used to ebay ALOT while in undergrad. Made some good pocket change. I have a love(aka weakness) for italian designer bags, and did ALOT of handbag shopping. That is, before money got alittle tight. Then, when I needed the money, I'd resell them.

One of my best finds was a python-skin Gucci bag that I purchased for alittle over $100(and yes, it was real). It looked like this bag that's part of the Summer 07 cruise collection You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login . The difference being that when the handle was pulled, it cinched the bag closed. The handle was python as well, and had polished hardware. It was really a gorgeous bag.

The auction was someone cleaning out their closets and wasn't looking for a profit. I assume this because the starting bid was low, and I believe I was the only person that bid on it. Come to find out, the purse at one point retailed for over $2500!  :o It was in new(uncarried) condition, with its dustbag, and I wore a few times. It was just too classy to just wear with jeans, and I knew someone else would be able to get more use out of it so I sold it. It ended up going for about $700. So, I pocketed close to $600.

Another great find was a Fendi grafitti purse that was a beautiful lavender, baby blue and tan color with a satin baby blue lining(w/gold hardware). I LOVED this bag. And it is very rare to find this particular color. You can find the orange ones, but not so much this one. Anyway, I paid alittle over $100, and sold it for about $300. I didn't want to sell it, but I had to.  :( To this day, I have yet to find this same bag ANYWHERE.

I had to ban myself from ebay.  I have bought and sold things (bought more than I sold).  The best find was a pair of boots (I forgot who made them, Donna Karen or Coach) for $30 brand new.  They still had the price tag on them for $200.  Someone bought them at the store put them in her closet and decided that she did not like them and it was too late to take them back to the store so she sold them.  When I moved I sold a ton of stuff on there and made about $700 off stuff that I was going to throw away.

I want to start getting things on ebay,I have seen some really cute stuff.  But I'm just so afraid of getting ripped off, and I'm not really sure how ebay works.

I have a confession to make...I bought both my wedding dress and my reception dress on ebay.  Wedding dress was Reem Acra, and reception dress A.B.S. (Allen Schwartz)...paid a fraction of the cost for both and literally save thousands...

I am a HUGE fan of ebay...patience is a virtue though if you are looking for something specific.

You can always start out by bidding on something small, like a used paperback or a used CD or something.  Then if it doesn't work out, you haven't lost much.

But you can see sellers' feedback scores and the percentage of positive versus negative feedback they've earned from buyers.  If they have a high numbers of feedback and it's over 98.5% positive, chances are, you won't get screwed.  And there are ways to get your money back if you do.

But some sellers don't like to sell to newbies/first timers because they suspect they're really banned buyers who just created a new account...or they worry that a legitimate newbie may just not "get" it and be too demanding, pestering, etc.  So, as a newbie, you'll probably want to contact sellers before bidding on their items, and tell them that you're for real but just inexperienced.

Also, starting a PayPal account is a good idea as fewer and fewer sellers still accept money orders and personal checks.  A PayPal acct is like an online checking account that you can fund through deposits from a real bank account or a credit card.  But sellers will only see the "email address" name of your PayPal account and not any other information.  Also, if you use PayPal, it's a lot easier to get your money back if the transaction goes bad.

If there's an item you're interested in bidding on on ebay, any of us could help you.

Very smart!

Yes, I have mental lists of things I want for the season, and I just keep checking back until I find them or something very similar.

I am ebayer too.  I have sold and bought.  More buying though.  I used to have dresses made to be sold on ebay.  I did good for awhile but then I got a real job.

Am I the only one that checks ebay before buying something online or in the store?

I love ebay.  I love my designer handbag deals that i have gotten.  Its the only way I can afford high end bags.

You can start off using the Buy it Now feature to get used to using eBay.  When you are ready, move up to the auctions.  The biggest piece of advice I can give to you is to know what you're buying.  If you are unsure of what you're bidding for, be sure to email the seller before you bid.  If you win, and then decide you don't want the item because you think it's a fake, you could risk your rating as a buyer.  Be especially wary of "brand new" designer handbags and goods being sold at "rock bottom" prices.

Happy eBaying!
