Product free or "rest" days?
« on: March 17, 2007, 04:07:45 PM »
Hey does anyone else have days when they just leave their hair product free and does it makes a difference?

All week I've either left my hair out or tied it back for work, either way I have put products in it, today i needed to go out quickly so just put it in 2 braids and threw on a cap.
I like to have days when i give my hair a "rest" from products and I always think that the following day if i leave my hair out, it feels and looks better but a lot of people can't see the logic in "rest days" I just wondered if I was the only one that does this?

That used to be my general haircare method.  My hair is mad beautiful without product.  I don't do it so much now, but hopefully will be returning in the summer.  I guess I give my hair a break when I wear twists.  Using 1 product also gives these kind of results.

what she said! ;D

my hair technically gets a little rest after i do an ACV rinse... i don't add product after that until the next day.

Lots of weekends, I do.  Some days I still do leave-in only, but for the entire winter, I haven't left the house without something in my hair.

i don't think my hair is ready to be totally naked yet. but in the summer (and maybe a few times when i'm not going outside during the winter), sometimes i would use only elucence and be done with it. i feel like i'm giving my hair a breather.

That is exactly the way i feel and it makes perfect sense to me, but a lot of people couldn't understand my logic.

I dunno. . .my hair feels pretty awful with nothing at all in it. Washing it (even co-washing) tends to leave it feeling stripped. Sometimes I feel like putting in leave in after cleansing is like applying salve  to a wound. OK maybe not that bad, but my hair feels pretty raw without any leave in. I am just now, after about 3 years in the wilderness, starting to find conditioners that really, really moisturize my hair again, so perhaps that would be possible in the future as I build up my hair's moisture retaining abilities.

Right now, I have several days of not adding extra product, but that is between washes, so I don't think it counts. If my hair was longer and I was wearing it in a large braid or two, then I think it could work.

I do this a lot at night after i work out. I'll leave my hair totally naked: no leave in conditioner, no oil, nothing. I don't think it makes much of a difference for my hair, but my scalp feels much better. This is totally some bootleg logic here, but I like the idea of letting my scalp breathe overnight without being coated with any gels or even my leave in. Sometimes, I might LIGHTLY put some oil or shea butter on my fingertips and do a scalp massage before bed. The next morning I'll dampen my hair with a spray bottle and do my usual leave-in/gel routine.

I always let my hair rest following my poo routine.
I'll poo, condition, then make about 4 plaits & leave to airdry. :)

I think I could definitely get away with no product in my hair because after I rinse out the conditioner and towel dry, my hair is nice and soft.  However, I can't get away with leaving it out all day because it is simply too short.  Once I get to a decent length, I will be glad to go 'product free' and bun or braid it.  I can't wait to get rid of my layers.

If I'm not leaving the house, I do it like KIM and Natakue. Just a little leave-in and that's it. During the summer, I may also be able to just get a way with a little leave-in, if I just pull it back into a ponytail, before going out.
