Castor Oil

Which brand do you use?   Does it really matter?  I've seen drugstore brands.  Any suggestions are appreciated :D

I get mine from either whole foods or the Vitamin shoppe (they both carry the same brand).  I can't remember the name  (found it...the brand is Home Health) but its cold pressed and unrefined.  i wouldn't use a refined one cause that means that they have used chemicals to extact more of the oil from the beans (hexane is what they use I think).  let me see if I can find a picture of the bottle I use

extremely thick, kinky, coils and curls that have a mind of thier own.

Right now I'm using the Jamaican Black castor oil but I have used the one nappy_crown uses too. I don't use the refined because of the chemical.

Ok so what's the deal with the Jamaican Black Castor oil....is it made from a different type of castor bean?  Something special added to it?  I've seen tons of women raving about it on other sites and I havn't a clue what the big deal is....

I saw this thread, and my stomach turned, from thinking about the days my grandparents used to make to take this stuff  :yuck:

i've been wondering this too. i've heard this kind is better for making hair thicker than the regular clearish castor oil...so it definitely piqued my interest  ;)

I used the HomeHealth brand.  This is definitely a staple of mine.

Well, from using both, I think it softens my hair just a little bit more. I do overnight treatments from time to time with it and when I did them with the clear, it works but still leaves a bit of an oily feeling behind because my hair won't absorb all of the oil. When I do the treatment with the Jamaican castor oil (which is only 1 tsp of oil on the ends followed by 1 tbsp of conditioner then covered with cap overnight) my hair will absorb every bit of the oil, no greasy feel in the morning.

Natukue:I don't know if your mom used to use the Haitian castor oil (l'huil maskreti) on you but the Jamaican one has a similar scent...not as strong though. It's kinda nostalgic..lol.

spiderlashes5000:I think there is one kind of castor oil that is water soluble, it's the sulphated castor oil, also called Turkey Red oil. I remember i was gonna use it for my sulfur recipe to boost the sulfur but never got around to ordering it. They sell it at fromnaturewithlove.com. The rest of them are not water soluble
