Shikaikai powder shampoo
« on: July 25, 2007, 12:26:08 AM »
I shampooed with Shikaikai/neem powder (I boiled the powders for about 20 min and let it steep for 10, probably didn't need that long though. Strained and put liquid in my shampoo bottle). It didn't lather at all but I still massaged the mixture into my scalp and I did the scalp test and there was no build-up! :o I did the stratch test 2 more times on all 6 sections and I was so shocked that my scalp was clean. The hair felt really reallly nice...clean but moist. After my deep conditioner the hair felt very silky, I think it loosened up the curl. I like to shampoo 2x a week so I am going to use the shikaikai on one of my wash days  ;D

I did something similar to this, when I was suffering from dandruff, the past 2 winters - and still do this the first washday after a color service.

I package a tablespoon of Shikaikai, Amla, Neem, Brahmi, Tulsi and Bhingraj powders into a large tea bag filter. I pour 2 cups of boiling water over one of these tea bags (4 cups over 2, when the dandruff was really bad and I just started treatment) and let steep for 30 min to 1 hour. No straining needed, just toss the used tea bag. Then just fill a few nozze bottles (for hair dye - from BSS) and your ready to go.

After scrubbing my scalp with BB Soy Poo and a little scalp scrubby pad (from BSS,) I rinse out the poo with plenty of warm water. I lean my head back and, keeping the nozzle close to the scalp, pour the liquid over my head. After that, I massage my scalp for a minute or two and then apply the condish of my choice (probably Trader Joe's Nourish. JessiCurl TooShea or EMBC,) let sit for a few minutes, while I soap and wash up the rest of me and then finally rinse my hair completely free of condish. (I wouldn't suggest leaving any of the condish in, unless you apply a second coat, after the tea & condish mix has been washed out. I fear it might cause irritation in some people.)

It has definitely worked well for my winter dandruff. I notice a difference after only 2 treatments and it's usually all gone after 4 or 5. (In winter, I wash 2x a week.)

It also helps remove any dye residue on my scalp much faster than regular poo or co-wash scrubbing. (I wait about 2-3 days after the color service to wash my hair.)

I'll give this treatment 4.5 stars! Took of one star since the powders can be a PITA to get, if you're not near a large East Indian population (and stores...) and they are sometimes out, too.
