I have a routine down too and at the rate I'm going, it will be my PERMANENT routine, no matter what season.

On Sunday, I washed and conditioned (I tried Giovanni products for the first time...they're pretty decent) and then shingled my hair with Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding.

But for me, the big difference is putting my hair in a pineapple every night before I go to bed with a scrunchie...don't even wrap it around twice..just sits loosely on top of my head.

This has done SO MUCH to keep my look going! Every morning, I just take it down, fluff and go. My hair does not mat, my curls are never mashed, and it stretches out the very back of my hair where the texture shrinks the most. As a result, the shape of my hair is MUCH more apparent! And here I was thinking I needed a haircut!

I've had one or two sections start to frizz up (in my crown area..no big surprise), but I just sprayed them with conditioner water, put some Eco-Styler gel on it (THE BOMB GEL...might even replace Fantasia!) and scrunched it....I was good to go.

It is now Thursday and I haven't spent more than 10 minutes on my hair since Sunday. My curls are still poppin' and defined, it's bouncy and kinda fluffy, not weighed down or anything...I'm having an EXCELLENT hair week.

If I can get 6 days of hair from shingling, then Miss Jessie's has definitely been bumped up to HG status for me. It's low maintenance, I'm not walking around with a wet head...I'm just loving this stuff!

I don't think I can do the pineapple thing.....I'm afraid it might create too much volume...which is the last thing my hair needs right now.

AC....how is the volume from the pineapple once you take it down?
extremely thick, kinky, coils and curls that have a mind of thier own.

Sorry this is sooooooo late! The way I oil wash is to:

1. Apply shikakai scalp oil & Vatika oil to hair let sit either 15min or overnight (if you have neither i suggest coconut oil) do not try detangling with comb or fingers just apply oil and put shower cap on
2. Detangle only under warm running water
3. Apply leave-ins
5. Seal with oil
5. Apply styling products

My hair has been in great condition since doing this 2-3x a week my hair seems to hold moisture better and is more supple feeling and it makes detangling sooooo much easier; hope this works for you too!  ;D

Blackhoney - can you please explain the process of an oil wash to me? I tried to search it, but the site keeps giving me this group of letters to decipher, I decipher, and it keeps telling me my answer is wrong - even when I listen to which letters are displayed.  I'd greatly appreciate your help! TIA.

Actually, NC, the volume is more under control than it ever is when I do a wash and go (and you KNOW how much I complain about that!). I think the shingling helps significantly because the product is distributed more evenly; it IS really heavy at FIRST when my hair is soaking wet, but it dries soft and fluffy and the volume is just the way I like it.

So, to answer you more directly, the shingling helps diminish any volume that a pineapple would cause.

you're going to cause me to rethink my current aversion to shingling.

I didn't like shingling because it separated my curls too much. I've tried wide tooth combs, small tooth combs, denman brushes. I prefer the look of finger styling.

However, the pineapple is the truth! My crown is my loosiest areas, it is barely wavy and prone to frizz. However, with the pineaple, my crown is safely tucked inside, and my tight curls on the outside are nicely stretched (just like AC said).

My crown will naturally frizz and loosen post-wash, but the pineapple has been giving me 5-6 day fluff and go hair as well. And on those days where the crown is just too far gone, I slick it back into a pin-back or puff, and if I'm well over a week (which has been happening as I get lazier and lazier about washing my hair) then I just slap it into a bun.

Why are you averse to it?

I used to ::) at shingling, too, but as much hair as I have? That's the only way I can be sure that product is evenly distributed all over my head. I've tried distributing with my fingers since I've been natural and it's never gotten me the look I wanted; my hair was always too big for my liking and it never lasted more than a day.

But with my shingling one day a week using my Denman and then pineapple-ing my hair for the rest of the week, I really don't even have to do my hair anymore, which is AWESOME. I get 5 day hair using this method, which I NEVER got with wash and going everyday and running product through my hair with my fingers. Plus, I'm not walking outside with a wet head. It feels great in the summer, but in the winter, it's NOT the business.

The payoff is worth it 100%. I get 30 extra minutes of sleep/relaxation every morning!

I took some pictures this morning that I will post later so you ladies can see what my hair is looking like on day 5. When I wash my hair on Sunday, I'll show you what it looks like when it's freshly shingled (someone asked me to do that in the Miss Jessie's thread).

@ Peajai, my crown is the exact same as yours. Pineappling has made my crown the most cooperative I can ever remember it being. When it does frizz, I just spray it and reshingle the frizzy section with Ecostyler or Curly Pudding. Scrunch it up and it's all good!

My adversion goes WAY back with shingling...but the more I think about it, my adversion is more to the mentality associated with Miss Jessies and that whole "shingling turns kinks to curls" thing more so than the application technique.

I do something similar to shingling...but I think its a tab bit closer to the curlisto application menthod that LadyLibra did a youtube video on.  I section my hair (5-6 sections) and apply my products and then diffuse.  This has given me upwards of 5-6 days of hair.  Now that I'm working out again (i'm on that Kanye workout plan..lol) I'm only doing 2-3 days since I need to wash more with all the sweating and stuff.

I may have to give shingling a shot...because even though the curlisto method is giving me some nice results, it tends to increase shrinkage (or at least incourage it) and I know that shingling tends to discourage shrinkage.  I don't have a hooded dryer here with me in TX, so when I get back to DC next month...i'm going to have to give this a try on my wash day (Sunday).

As far as the pineapple, my crown is my TIGHTEST section (hence the name nappy_crown..its very literal....lol).  So I tend to pull my hair down and back to strech it out.  My loosest section is the back of my hair, so that tends to stay the same.  I usually just let the stream from the shower "wake" up my hair, and when I'm dressed, I fluff a bit and then I'm out.  I think the pineapple might encourage my crown to shrink up even more.  So so that I'm clear, when u say u pineapple, you pull all of your hair up on top of your head (like a high ponytail) and secure...right?

I was the EXACT same way. But then I remembered that you don't have to use Miss Jessie's to shingle...I could do it with my Cantu Shea Butter, as well (if I wasn't so lazy about going to target). Once I divorced the product application technique from the mindset of that particular product line, I realized that it really is an awesome technique, especially for curlies with really thick hair like me.

Yep! I put it right on top of my head and secure it with a scrunchy. It's not a ponytail because I don't wrap it around at all...I just put the scrunchie around all my hair and then let it chill.

Since your hair is the reverse, have you tried doing a loose ponytail at the back? That way it could stretch your super coily crown.

Exactly. Miss Jessie's really hijacked that whole technique by putting a name and even a trademark to it. It's what people with thick hair have been doing forever. They made it sound like a way to force your hair to do what it don't, like a sign of hating what you got, when it's really a more efficient way of caring for/styling it.

For me, it was only when I found hair sites that I started trying to apply product over my head all at once or in very few sections. Before, I always applied my product in small sections and on dry hair. The only thing I don't do is combing the product through; I tend to just fingercomb and smooth. Eventually I worked my way back to that; better distribution, moisture, hold, definition, less product. The only time I do the gigantic sections now is in summer when I do Bohemian or just apply CAG and go. It doesn't matter that much then since my hair gets wet and redone more frequently and there's more moisture in the air to offset the fact I missed a few sections.

Hi everyone, it's a little bit late but happy new year anyway. :)

I don't have a specific winter routine, I just try not to go out with wet hair.
When I have time in the morning I co wash my hair (almost everyday) and put a small amount of Home made sheabutter balm. My hair is then soft and my curls are well defined.

Do you have special treatments to protect or moisturize your hair in winter?
