well damn, i missed all the good stuff today...

ITA w/ya Afrocurls... i am to the point where i don't give a f*ck.  i am still trying to grow my hair out as long as possible out of curiousity... but today at work one of my managers came in with a new haircut, she cut off 16 inches of hair.  it's still long enough to put in a little ponytail, but she looks SO MUCH BETTER with short hair.  it made me consider BCing again.

i used to be the biggest heat abuser in my permie days, so i think it was good for me to abstain for awhile.  but now that i'm chemical-free, my hair is much stronger... and now i know how to use heat responsibly... so straightening isn't a big taboo for me anymore.  i just figure if i burn it straight one day, i just have a good excuse to chop again. ;D my hair isn't quite as thick as yours, but i'm with you - if they ain't detangling and styling it, they can STFU!!!

Wow I am soooo late but Afrocurls I really appreciate your honesty and realness about everything (just to point that out there! :D).
but gurl do what U want to do! I feel that hair is hair. I love being natural I love that fact that I can do anything with my hair as I please. I tell u one thing, u do have to becareful with heat but guess what happens when water touches ur hair again? ummm not magic but it reverts back. I cant stand some of the natural nazi's out there who are preaching to do this or dont do that. I dunno maybe its me, but I think that they have their own internal issues. not all but some. for example, I do not relax my hair anymore, and if I complained about how "permies" talk sh!t about me I get mad right? but then I turn around and say oh ur a trator(sp?) because u wanna look like a european or ur still on that crack!! um....thats messed up. its contradicting too.
yes I have membership on np but I barely go. Truth is I went on np and saw some beautiful hairstyles on women and realized they all had fotki accounts which encouraged me to set one up and stalk their albums lol lol  ;D.
ok so I am rambling but Afrocurls pressing is not the end of the world and I dare someone to tell u that sis! :D

Moral of my response: 1. Do you
2. questions urself: who are these people? do they even matter?
3. HAVE FUN only one life to live

have a nice day :D

NP should just come out and say ONLY AFRO COTTONY HAIR THAT DOES NOT COIL WHEN WET NEED JOIN.  Seriously.

Girl, I've been saying that for the longest.  If they'd just put that on the homepage, it would eliminate alot of BS.

Then that would eliminate the need for a separate C-Napp board.

What about you all? If you've been natural for longer than say, 3 years, has your attitude toward doing "forbidden things" (i.e. heat styling, coloring, getting a weave) relaxed a bit or as you just as emphatic about not doing them as the day you went natural?

Man.....I've been sooo thinking about getting my hair pressed for Christmas that it ain't even funny.  I'm going to be traveling a lot and I need something that's gonna hold up to my schedule without me having to wet my hair everyday.  Let's not even begin to mention that damn 3oz liquid rule TSA got going on....3oz of product on my head is about 2-3 days worth TOPS.
extremely thick, kinky, coils and curls that have a mind of thier own.

Ok, I've got a question...

There have been plenty of threads where we've asked folks to post pics of results, styles, or whatever...and they get alot of views...but hardly no responses.  I, for one, get tired of being the first one to post a pic and I know yall get tired of seeing them...so what's the big deal about joining in?  Some of you have never shown us a pic of your hair...not that you have to...but I mean, why not?

Gurl, that wouldn't work because Dee has hair that coils when wet and stays coiled when dry.  Her hair has definition.  A lot of chicks on that site have afro-curly hair.  Some dont have curls at all but waves.

It took me a really long time to put a pic of my hair up even just for my avi , for reasons being, my hair has always been like this - granted it's probably in better condition and looks better in terms of style but the natural curls have always been here so it's not a new exciting thing for me my hiar has been like this for 27 years why start taking pics of it now?..lol
I don't have a fotki or any kind of hair album so it's not that easy for me to find a picture of my hair if that makes sense?

and reason for me personally not adding or responding to posts showing pics of results, pure and simple, I'm lazy. ;D

I get what you're saying though..

I know what you mean. My hair needs about the same and my strands are not even as thick as yours. But I tend to get good multiple day hair so I won't be pressing it for a while (I want to wait until it grows out a bit).

I don't have a problem with straightening hair. To me it's the feeling of obligation ("this is the only way I can make my nappy hair look good") that I'm against. I'm also anti relaxer because they are straight poison in a jar. Anything that leaves you with thick green slime under your scalp must be doing all kinds of untold things to your system. And to make it look good you have to blow it out/press it anyway, so it's pointless to me.

As opinionated as I tend to be, I don't like imposing your beliefs on people, and I would never even sit down and try to convince someone to go natural. I've mentioned it enthusiastically to people I'm close to who have seriously wrecked hair, and I've protested vehemently when naturals I know want to get a perm, but you have to draw the line somewhere! I think it's more authentic when people come to it themselves, and then maybe you give them some encouragement. But to try to argue and bully someone into it? That's BS to me.

That said, I don't think it's hypocritical for people with natural hair to look down on relaxing hair. What are they supposed to do? Look up to it?   To me this is different from having a sense of superiority over the actual people that have relaxed hair just because they have relaxed hair, and also very different from ignorant people mocking the natural form of someone's hair, both of which I take exception to. But I don't see a contradiction between choosing to keep one's hair natural and calling relaxing hair "Europeanizing it"; to me, it is what it is.

On the strawset looking like natural hair: My favorite twist out of all time which I did for a party last NYE, by day 3 or so when it started getting fluffier it really did look like the shake & go in someone's fotki, I forget who. I think that twistouts with gel tend to have more of a wash & go look especially as they go into multiple hair because they look less stylized.

You must be talking about me!

Well, when I first joined I had NO camera digital or otherwise. I got one this year, took some blurry-ass experimental hair shots,  but I guess I just didn't give it much thought after that. What's ironic is, when I first found the hair boards and saw all those albums I had my fotki all planned out, but no camera to take the pics with. I might take & post a couple soon. ;)

IA--I think most African Americans call into the afro curly hair category. I think that NP was trying to prevent the site from turning into what the 3C category became on NC--just one big quest for curl definition.  I think now questions about curl definition and curly products are not really discouraged on the site because the questions are reasonable and don't overwhelm the product and dicussion threads. JMO.

I believe that it's the CNaps that have a hair type in the minority (of African Americans or any African in the diaspora) to be honest. I don't know about throughout Africa.

That's an interesting point Chelacious. I haven't been on NP often but from the descriptions of that hair type in this thread, I think you might be right.

Given the vast array of hair types I've seen on Africans that I've met from countries in the West, East, North and South of the Continent- from straight hair to the tightest curl and all different sorts of wave patterns in between- I think that's also true for Africans in Africa.

That makes alot of sense.  Natural hair isn't anything new for me either b/c I've had it 21 out of 26 years of life...so I totally understand that.  But at the same time...it kind of comes with the territory of being involved with a hair board.  Personally, I think having an avatar is enough, at least we can see your hair.

You must be talking about me!

No!  I'm not talking about anyone in particular, just the general idea.  I'd like to see more hair than just my own or the hair I've seen over and over again. Plus, it would be so much easier to communicate about hair if we all knew what eachother's looked like.  There's only so much that can be translated through explanation...but pictures

Some of you have never shown us a pic of your hair...not that you have to...but I mean, why not?

I don't have a digi cam yet, and I know how folks feel about cell phone pics. I figured I'd sit out until I could get my hands on something that will take decent photos.

Anything that leaves you with thick green slime under your scalp must be doing all kinds of untold things to your system.

Do you have a source to support this statement? For years I've heard people talking about the film that relaxers supposedly create under a person's scalp, but nobody has ever named a study or studies that have proven this to be true.
