I don't have a digi cam yet, and I know how folks feel about cell phone pics. I figured I'd sit out until I could get my hands on something that will take decent photos.

I recommend the Canon Powershot A620, I love it!  I think mine was right around $200, well worth it.

Do you have a source to support this statement? For years I've heard people talking about the film that relaxers supposedly create under a person's scalp, but nobody has ever named a study or studies that have proven this to be true.

All the info I've heard is anecdotal. I'll look at some journals and report back, though.

That makes alot of sense.  Natural hair isn't anything new for me either b/c I've had it 21 out of 26 years of life...so I totally understand that.  But at the same time...it kind of comes with the territory of being involved with a hair board.  Personally, I think having an avatar is enough, at least we can see your hair.

Thats the main reason why i figured it was about time to put one up, it's so easy to say " well my hair is kind of 3b/c sometimes more c it's not silky and it's not coarse and it's not thick but it's not thin" it's my hair so I completely know what I mean, but the next person is like  WTF???.. LOL
 Plus it make sense when I say to someone else " your hair is similar to mine" ( which doesn't often happen!) for them to be able to see at least one pic. 

this is the only board I belong to that I've put one up though, so ya'll should be proud you broke me down that much..lol

Ok, I've got a question...

There have been plenty of threads where we've asked folks to post pics of results, styles, or whatever...and they get alot of views...but hardly no responses.  I, for one, get tired of being the first one to post a pic and I know yall get tired of seeing them...so what's the big deal about joining in?  Some of you have never shown us a pic of your hair...not that you have to...but I mean, why not? 

Jazzi, I was thinking this same thing myself.  I don't think that a person has to have an album or anything, but when we are discussing hair, it is always better to see a person's hair to know what they mean when they are describing their hair or products.  It just makes sense to have some sort of pic or two.  Because there are way too many different hair types among the 3's and 4's and everything in between.  So, if I see a thread talking about a certain product, it is easier for me to rule out a product (not always) based on what that persons hair looks like in comparison to mine. 

I personally hate taking pictures of myself.  You might not get that from looking at my pics because I have so many.  But is also a way to gauge my own progress.  So, I take the pics, even though I know I look a damn fool in them.  We are showing ourselves in so many different times....wet hair, no product, product failures, good parts of our hair, the parts that bugs us, good hair days, and days we just don't know what is going on.  And it is such a vulnerable thing.  It is getting real with others about your hair.  It is what it is and the pics shows it.  Now, I know I may be looking pretty shitty in my pics, but I feel that most could care less what I look like.  They basically want to see what my hair looks like when relating hair or products.  So, you're not really seeing any fancy poses in fancy places.  Your not getting good house shots or a lavish home.  You're getting pics straight up.  Nothing more or less.  If you get a messy coffee table, I just crop that bad boy and keep it moving.  I am just trying to say, that those things are less important to ME.  I want to see your napps!

And lastly, an avatar is good enough.  I don't have to see a thousand pics of your hair.  A few will do.  So, having a couple to share would be nice.  I have a thousand and one pics, because I just continually snap and never really go through them.  As long as I don't look hella crazy (you know the milk carton type) then I am good.  I just upload them.  Most of you guys have seen my hair look crazy, when my fiancee has only seen it done.  And he hasn't even seen those ones that I have posted for you guys.   

So, I feel you Jazzi.  You're on point with this one.

I'm noticing alot of women that have been natural for years are turning to locs as a final destination.   Do you think this happens b/c at some point, you just get tired of dealing with your hair or is this the guaranteed way to achieve the great lengths many expect, but never find, when deciding to go natural?

Probably the length and the style is very easy to maintain, and pjism doesn't have to get so out of control with locks.

However  I am the exact opposite. I saw my mothers hair growing and I longed to touch my hair. Not my locks. So I cut them and started the current journey I am on.

I missed the easiness of locks, until  learned how to really care for my hair. So I think it just depends. Locks are work on wash days, but other than that, a scarf or satin pillow is your best friend, and also clear products that don't build up in your locks.

I think it is done for length.  I have relatives that hair never seemed to pass their ears.  So, they dreaded.  And when they did, their hair got to be so long.  But I think they're hair did not grow from lack of knowing how to care for their hair relaxed properly.  So, they went natural in order to dread.  They have long beautiful locks.  And secondly, locks are much easier to care for than just wearing your hair natural.

I disagree.  I think loc care is just as much work as taking care of loose hair.  Loced hair isnt necessarily the easy way out.

I don't post any pics because my parents are not comfortable with me puting pictures of myself on the Internet. Also I don't know how to . I joined because I think the convo is thought provoking and I want to learn more about
hair products, styles etc... I'll admit I don't comment on a lot of the post that I read but when I see a pic I almost always say something.

i don't know, but i don't think i wanna loc anymore now.  i mean i love locs but i REALLY LOVE my loose hair.

why do people do that?  did i not sugar-coat the answer enough... was it too difficult to read... did they just not like me... man, i have to be overreacting... anyway my feet hurt and i need a drink...

Different reasons for different folks. The three most common reasons I hear:
1. It's the next level of natural--the nappy grail, so to speak.
2. It's easier to deal with than loose (meaning that you don't have to figure out styles all the time and focus so much on the right products, etc.). My mom probably falls into this category--she never had loose naps, jumped from a texturizer right into locs.
3. They want long hair and/or hair that grows down instead of out.
