Is there a real difference between various Denman brushes?
« on: April 22, 2009, 10:49:12 PM »
I've had a Denman D4 (9 row) for a couple of years. I use it to detangle with my hair soaking in conditioner, but I am always sure to finger comb and smooth when I apply styling products. I have tried shingling products in with the Denman, but I get super shrinkage and curls only at the ends. It ends up looking like a bad rollerset. The only way I can save it is to start the wash process all over again.

I just bought a Denman D3 (7 row) on sale at Sally's. I'm wondering if I will be able to successfully shingle with this one because it has less bristles? Does anyone else have multiple Denman brushes that they are able to use for different purposes? Or are they all the same?

For me personally, I have a D4, a D3, and the paddle brush and they all give me the same result...the "bad rollerset" look you described.  I'm wondering if that will change with gaining length.

I've never used the Denman to "elongate" my curls, because they won't elongate when manipulated. I have the D4 and the D83, and both make my hair look the same. In fairness though, I've never used one to apply product to my hair (I think my hair would rebel).

You detangle with a Denman? :o

My hair would be ripped clean out! I detangle with my Aveda paddle brush and use my Denman only to apply product.

I DO get that "curl at the end" thing on the looser sections of my hair but the coilier parts look awesome.

I don't think the difference between the Denmans would be noticeable, though. I wonder if Goody has a website that explains it?

I get that too, curled ends, when I use the D4.  Do you use a fine tooth comb or a wide tooth comb to apply the style product in your hair?

I keep hearing people talk about this paddle brush- is it like the HG for detangling b/c right now detangling is not my friend.

AshKat: You asked the question that popped into my mind as soon as I read about that Aveda brush! I have been eyeing it up for years but kept putting it down because of the hefty price. If it's so much better for detangling than a Denman (which I actually like to use for that) then maybe I need to pick one up. . .

peajai: I have the D4 and seven row one (I think mine might be a little smaller and called a D35? I can't remember for sure though). The latter is so much stress to comb through my hair it's not even worth it. And on top of that, the gaps in the brush miss a lot of my hair so it's not that great a detangler. I mean, the hair looks detangled but if I follow it up with a D4 I can see how much of the shed hair and smaller tangles that it missed. I think it frizzes the hair out more too, but I haven't used it as a styling tool as such so I can't say for sure.

The D4 I can use for applying certain products, as long as I smooth my hair back out again (usually leave ins before I add a styler). I wouldn't even think of usng the seven row one for that, though.

Yea- I want to try it but the nearest aveda is about a hour and half away from and I'm sick of shopping online. BUT, I did find a look-a-like at target. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i199/Khunter09/brush.jpg

@Afrocurls: Yep I've been detangling with the D4 for about 2 years. Wide tooth combs just were not cutting it for me, I was always left with random "dreads" throughout my hair. I do it in sections though and always start at the ends. I do have the Goody Jojoba Oil brush, but it only worked on dry or pressed hair for me (It was really great on my pressed hair). The teeth aren't deep or strong enough for detangling my hair wet.

@nellie: I apply product with my hands and smooth/rake it through. I was going to try using the Denman D3 after that to smooth down each section.

@jeamaria: I think I am going to wash my hair tonight and I will try detangling with the D3. I have somewhere to be early saturday morning though so I don't want to chance trying to apply product with it just yet.

@AshKat: That's the exact same kind of brush I used to wrap my relaxed hair with. I use to always snap the plastic paddle brushes so I switched over to wood handles only. I know I still have an old one. Maybe I'll try that too on a section of hair when I detangle tonight.

Denman does have a "Brush Genie" on their website to tell you which brush to get. I played around with it a little bit. I'm pretty sure it's not taking our hair into account.

This is the brush that I use...and its pretty much a good knock off of the aveda brush.  Yodit uses the Aveda brush on my hair, but I'm just not willing to spen that much on a brush....but I found this one in target and it works just as well.
extremely thick, kinky, coils and curls that have a mind of thier own.

As an aside--

The Denman 83 "is" a paddle brush and the one I use. I don't use my D4 anymore--it wasn't as good for my hair after I got to armpit (stretched) length.

I use the Denman 83 brush as well, it works pretty good. I have been eyeing the Aveda paddle brush for a while though...

I used both the D3 and the D4 for detangling the other night. (I forgot to dig out my old wood handle paddle brush, next time.) The D3 slid through my hair much easier than the D4. And there weren't any shed hairs left behind when I went back over some sections with the D4.

The D3 gave me the same curls at the ends, bad rollerset  look when I used it to apply products. I was doing a braidout so it didn't matter altough the braid out was unsuccessful, but that's a different problem.

I forgot to add that i DO use the D4 on conditioner-soaked hair to detangle.  Anything else is just rips my hair out at this point.  For me the D4 is the detangling HG.  As for applying products/styling...unless I'm using it to help me slick back, all Denmans/brushes/combs make my hair look crazy.  I use my hands to rake and smooth for applying products.  My daughter has extremely thick 3A/3B hair and the D83 is the HG for detangling her hair in minimal time with minimal fuss.
@Chelacious:  it's helpful to know that the D4 stopped working as well and the D83 worked better with APL hair.  My hair is shoulder length right now, so I'll be sure to pay attention if my detangling sessions start to get out of hand and try the D83 instead.
