I use the D31.  The rows are spaced farther apart than the D3 and D4 which has made detangling easier.  I think it is a great buy if you have extremely dense hair.

I use the D4 to detangle my hair... and I just bought the D3 because it was on sale... and I didn't see much of a difference.  I think I get more shed hair in the D3 but my hair sheds like crazy no matter what I use...

I have the Denman D4 and have been using it for a few years and it detangles my hair wonderfully.

So I just realized last night that running a wide tooth comb through my leave-in conditioner (KBB Hair Milk) soaked hair counteracts some of the shrinkage caused by detangling with a Denman.  Then I raked and smoothed through my castor oil and CAG. There is definitely still some shrinkage but alot less than normal.

I don't know why it took me so long to figure this out.

Hmmm, I wonder why it has that effect?

Yeah Denman does make the hair shrink a lot more. Still I love the effects of it over the comb. I have seen some people complain that the Denman causes more split ends for them too. I was over at Curlynikki's blog and read that.

This one thing I have noticed. I have the pink Denman. It is a lot more flexible then I am used to with my Goody brush. I still like it, but I am going to see if the black ones are more along the lines of my Goody.

The nerve right? Goody over Denman...lol!!!

I wonder if the people that get splits are using the Denman in sections or trying to attack their whole head at once. If it's the former then maybe I reeeeeally need to try that Aveda brush!

I think the people who get split ends from using a Denman brush are probably using it on hair that hasn't been detangled.

I would not recommend ANY person with curly, cottony, afro textured hair use a Denman to detangle. On my head, the Denman is for smoothing product ONLY. I don't even pick up that brush until I've detangled my hair with the Aveda.

(And if you don't wanna shell out $20 for the Aveda paddle brush, then just get you a cheaper one that is gentle and won't rip your hair out)

Well for me, the Denman over clumps and pulls all my curls to the ends. That causes super shrinkage that I am unable to combat with just raking and smoothing with my bare hands. The wide tooth comb distributes and separates the curls more. I have been doing this every time I wash for the past few weeks and showing much more length!

I had started using the Denman to detangle because using the wide tooth comb only was leaving behind little "dreads" at my nape. But I think now I am going to use it only when I feel the dreads forming. Using it every time I washed was too much.

BTW, I've tried detangling with the Goody Jojoba Oil Paddle Brush and a Goody wood handle paddle brush I used as a permie. Neither worked for me. The teeth of any paddle brush are just not deep enough to get through all this hair in it's curly state and the bristle pad of the wood paddle brush kept popping out of the handle. I did love the Jojoba Oil brush on my press and curl though.

As an aside--

The Denman 83 "is" a paddle brush and the one I use. I don't use my D4 anymore--it wasn't as good for my hair after I got to armpit (stretched) length.

Denman makes a paddle brush???

i love my D3, but this has me thinking.  i wonder how well this paddle brush would work for me?  every other brand of paddle brush, my hair has destroyed :lmao: aside from the Aveda paddle brush, which i haven't tried yet but also hear good things about.

When I use my Denman which is once maybe twice a month, I always start FIRST with a WIDETOOTH COMB.  However, when using a comb or denman, I have to section and detangle hair from end to root.  The Goody Jojoba Oil Paddle Brush was a joke to my hair.  I think the bristles just bent and glided over my hair.  After two years and two Denman brushes, I haven't had much breakage/split ends.  The Denman is very effective in removing my shed hair.

ITA with this comment, I own the Aveda brush best investment ever. that includes wearing my hair non curly as well.  I am very tender headed and using those Dermans do not work for me.  I tried them all so I brought 2 of the Aveda Brushes and love them, best investment.
