Crisco As Moisturizer
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:04:47 PM »
Wondering...

Does anyone use Crisco on their hair presently, in a past life, or all of the above?  I just read this somewhere and we don't even cook with Crisco anymore, so I was just wondering if anyone ever had.  Or grandparents or anything...or what is philosophy behind anyone putting grease in the hair.  Someone said it was an excellent moisturizer...my gag reflexes are active just thinking about it.  Reminds me of mayonnaise

Thanks,
Arnesha

There actually was a thread about this a few months ago.  You can probably find it if you search for Crisco.

No, I personally wouldn't want to use it.  It is way too heavy for me and I don't like the texture or smell.  But apparently some people have good results with it.

Mayonnaise in my hair grosses me out, too.  I have tried that and hated the results but the smell and the staining was beyond bad.

thank you, Lady.

something told me to search.  lol i was just so ready to get answers.  but i am about to go search.  i'd fear it would look to greasy.  crisco on your hands is like massage lotion.

thanks though

I remember the Crisco thread. I didn't grow up using it in food as it used to contain lard which my mother didn't cook with. I still don't use it, although the new version doesn't have lard. I see the reason for using grease these days more than ever since it's so cold. I can't believe the difference the drop in temperature made  on my hair this year. I have been adding more and more greasy stuff to my regimen all year and especially now that it's colder; it gives that extra layer of protection, makes the hair more supple than most leave ins can. The weird thing is my hair definitely needs that extra lubrication that grease gives, although it's difficult to absorb, which usually turns me off a product.

I've been using buttery stuff like Sheamoisture leave in, though. I can't use your typical greasy stuff whether it's blue magic petroleum or qhemet biologics hydrogenated oils. They tend to leave my hair crackly. I imagine the crisco users apply it with a very light hand to avoid the excess slickness. Shea butter isn't one of the greasiest butters, but since I layer the Sheamoisture over a lotiony leave in that I mix with castor oil, I find that I need much less than when I used it in the past. Since the crisco users are using it to "seal" they will likely avoid the greasy look unless their hair really rejects oily stuff.

If I remember correctly, Crisco is just hygrogenated cottonseed oil....which basicly makes it sorta soild texture.  Its the same processed used to make butters from a lot of oils.  On another site, a lot of ladies have reported getting good results on thier skin (espically those with dry skin) and hair.  I don't see what the problem is with using.  Give it a shot and report back with your findings.
extremely thick, kinky, coils and curls that have a mind of thier own.

it's cool OP, i say don't knock it until you try it.  i got curious after nosing around a few crisco threads on this board.  then i got even more curious and googled it to read up about it some more.  i toyed around and experimented and made a recipe.  i never came back here to post about it though, but there is an album in my 'products and experiments' folder in my fotki.  i see that it gets lots of visits.  so i don't know, there might be some people who are using my recipe on the low, or either they are just curious.

i love it.  my hair has never felt so soft.  so far i have used it for twists and as an all-around moisturizer before doing twists.  i might use it more often this winter and try to do more braids/twists/knots/braidouts/twistouts this winter.  right now i have my hair in bantu knots to prep for a curly braidout.

It turned into all the rage on another hairboard community that I visit frequently so I decided to try it last winter. Couldn't believe the results. Initially, it wasn't so much that it was Crisco that I had an aversion to inasmuch as it was the fact that its oil — I hate the way oil feels on my hair. But last winter I was desperate, it was soooo cold here and soooo devastatingly drying on my hair so I'm like what's there to loose. I tried it and really, really liked it. I'd forgotten all about that until I saw this post.

Just remember, it's an oil so it can't moisturize your hair but it certainly acts as a wonderful sealant/emollient on freshly moisturized hair. So I'd say go ahead and try it cause you might like it too.

I've been seeing Crisco pop up all over the natural hair net, and from what I understand it's like shea.  Are you still using it ShortyCocoa?
