Flat Ironing Resistant Hair
« on: August 10, 2009, 04:15:50 pm »
Which flat iron would work best for hair that's both hard to straighten and prone to reversion? I've heard good things about the Chi and Sedu irons- which of these is the better brand? Also are there any tips for straightening resistant hair with minimal damage? TIA

Resistant hair needs alot of heat, so an iron that has a maximum temperature of 430-450 degrees would be the best bet.  I have an Andis Nano Diamond (430 max) that I haven't used on myself yet, but have used on very resistant relaxed hair w tons of new growth and it got it bone straight.  I don't know if there's a ceramic iron that fights reversion.  My hair reverts even while I'm ironing   When I was natural earlier in my life, the only thing that kept my hair straight was the heat of a marcel flat iron.  Of course those aren't the healthiest option, but if I ever wanted my hair forreal straight, I'd use one.

I looked on Folica, they had other Andis ones but not the Diamond. Where did you get yours?  I noticed the Sedu revolution goes up to 450. I was going to go for the classic one but that's like 35 degrees cooler. So if I get one from that site which has free shipping, I guess I could pay a little extra for that model.

I never got the amount of straightness from the flat iron, ceramic or otherwise that I got from the stove top pressing comb. I'm not sure what the max heat was on the ones I used, though. But my hair tangles too much these days for dragging an ultra fine, ultra hot comb through it so that's no longer an option.

ETA: I just looked at the video. I have NEVER seen an iron that thin! It's cheaper than the electric ones I was looking at but I'd have to buy a new oven on top of that. i am like 95% sold, though. If he had shown a girl with thicker and/or tighter hair I would probably be placing my order right now, lol.

I got it brand new from Ebay and was able to talk the seller down to $25 including shipping.  It has really long plates too.

*it goes up to 425, not 430.

I had bought a chi (on ebay for $89 including shipping), but it was ok. I recently bought a Royale...Yes, the one that they sell in the mall and I"m telling you it is the best!!! It even smoothes my split ends-incredible!

The chi is good now, but it would not stay hot for long periods of time-long enough to tame the mane.

The royale I got for $39.99 including free shipping for But It Now.

I will get the curling iron next.

I know you are asking about flat irons but have you considered an electric hot comb? My sister has resistant hair and it works like a charm for her :) She uses the Andis brand....HTH  :)

Hey, ever-so-late but thanks everybody for the recs. I got the Sedu and I'm getting the Andis iron finally- Target has it, BTW. I might try the Andis comb also, if the teeth are not ultra-fine. I like the closeness to the scalp, it's just that my hair snarls so easily these days I can't take a hot comb to it like I would when I was younger- but I still need that level of heat. What about the Royale; how hot does it get?
