Cheaper (yet comparable) alternatives to Kinky Curly Knot Today
« on: October 24, 2009, 03:24:30 PM »
I've been looking for store-bought leave-in at a better price per ounce with similar consistency and performance under a hair gel or cream that has wholesome ingredients. It's been tough finding products that meet all criteria, but this is what I've found:

Kinky-Curly Knot Today, 8oz., $12.00 - about $1.50 per oz. (ouch!)

Substitutes I've found:

- Giovanni Direct Leave-in
- Dr. Bronner's Hair Styling Creme (You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login

)
- Alba Botanica Leave-in Conditioner (You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login

)
- Beauty by Donna Marie Miracurl Detangler (You are not allowed to view links.Register or Login

) *online only

All of these have worked well and have cost less.

The Bronner's Hair Creme is OK as "underwear" beneath a styler on wet hair. In fact, it's pretty good. I think it's ok as a moisturizer to refresh a twist-out too. But as a stand alone product on dry hair, it does not have enough hold to define curls because it's oil based. It's strictly for touch-up moisture and protection.

On the other hand, I am really loving the Alba leave-in conditioner. I used it as a hair cream on dry hair today to replace my Blended Beauty light styling lotion, and it was lovely. Creamy, seeps in well, lightly defines curls - great for buns! And cheaper than my other stuff - only $8.49 at Whole Foods. KCCC is $12.00.

I like the Alba Leave in Conditioner and the Giovanni 50/50 as a leave in and deep conditioner.  I can even use the Alba to touch up dry curls that start to frizz, which I can't do with most of my other conditioners, as it will either (1) do nothing or (2) leave the hair stringy.

LOIS System - OS thick/med silky/spongy (or cottony).  Definitely frizzy, curly, and fuzzy :)

Thanks so much for that review Mo.  I was really curious about that stuff b/c the ingredients are so nice.  I feel you about the BB Light Styling Lotion, I still have some and have been rationing it out to myself for about a year!  :lol:  I can't afford anything by Blended Beauty anymore.
