What's in & What's out in the Natural Hair World?
« on: January 27, 2010, 06:44:02 pm »
I've been out of the loop w online hair stuff for a little while, but I'm noticing that what was in 6 years ago isn't so much anymore.  One thing i'm noticing is that  there has been a shift toward bigger more stretched hair and curl definition isn't the desired look anymore.  There's also been a shift from commercial products to homemade products.  What's in and out for you?

I don't know if I was ever into what was in or not I was just hoping to find something that worked on my hair finally after my whole life being natural and having to make do with any products I could get my hands on.

But  I don't worry too much about trying the next new line in the hopes it will be my ideal product, I'm over spending money on the 'next big thing' and just getting by with my blended beauty and Curl Junkie products..

So I guess for me being a product junkie is out

What's in:  YouTube.  Can't beat the tutorials and product reviews, especially for style challenged people like me.

What's out:  Fotki.  What's up with the empty Fotki accounts?  You click to open up an album and no pics.

Curl def is still what's in for me. But fullness is also in. I will not let my fullness suffer to achieve curl def. I am also into, and always will be into, maintaining healthy hair. I try not to do anything that will take from the health of my hair.

Flowers and headbands are out for me these days. I use to love a huge flower in my hair. Maybe when the summer is here and flowers are in bloom this will change.

I know that if someone is not a member of fotki or is not logged in they cannot view my albums. When i sign out of fotki and then try to view my albums they show up as empty. That could be it.
I don't have the audacity to alter the way that God made me and be anything but natural. To be otherwise is to make the statement that He somehow made a mistake.

IN:

-Youtube definitely. More and more natural hair chicks are moving towards "real life" product demonstrations. It's gonna be a lot harder for people to fake healthy hair with camera flashes, certain camera angles, etc.

OUT:

- The Frohawk
- Flowers, barrettes, click clacks and all those other childish looking hair accessories. Frankly, I'm happy to see this one bite the dust.
- Headwraps
- Kinky twists that are done with fake hair. I'm not seeing these as much anymore.
- Cornrows/braids

In for me: full, moisturized hair, more protective styles, multi-day styles, more natural products.

Out for me: full on curl definition, less commercial products.

That also can happen if your membership has expired.  I remember when mine expired and I tried to view certain fotki albums and it kept showing up that those members all had empty albums.  I knew their albums were not empty though.  Whenever I renewed, I could see people's albums again.

Well darn Afrocurls, I live Alaska and we get everything a few years behind everywhere else. That is my justification for the following; I wore a flower in head last week, a headwrap last week and I plan to do my twist with kinky twist next week. I think I was fly on all accounts  ;) I was never one to follow trends anyway  ;D just doing me.

How ya like me now :)

In for me: protective styles, twists, slick backs & wraps  ;D
Out for me? I'm not sure really.  I would never do the barrette thing, and the flower in the winter thing isn't fashionable really.  I haven't had cornrows in a while, but that's because I didn't like the way they looked the last time.

My hair will be longer by the summer, so I will have to see what else works.  I want to do the curl def thing, but right now I'm getting mostly waves than curls  :-\
