1) What styles will you use during the protective style challenge?
two-strand twists with and without rollers, box braids, and maybe even cornrows

2) What products will you use to keep your hair moisturized?
I am going to buy more jojoba oil to apply nightly; I also mixed a leave-in spritz of leave-in condish, jojoba (a little!), and some distilled water

3) Who will do said styles for you (ie. yourself, stylist, friend)?
Usually it'll be me doing it, sometimes my mom - which is the way I prefer it ;)

4) How often will you have to redo your style?
Once a week my scalp requires water.

5) What will be your process upon changing styles (ie. shampoo washing/cond, DT)?
Deep Treatment (20 mins under dryer), Creme of Nature moisturizing shampoo, Silk Elements Luxurious condish.  And I don't even know if this is how I'm supposed to do it, but I require a weekly DT and still don't know the order of how to do it....

1) What styles will you use during the protective style challenge?
---two-strand twists, twistouts, phony tail with ends baggied underneath

2) What products will you use to keep your hair moisturized?
---generic matrix biolage condish, raw shea butter, raw coconut oil, distilled water spritz

3) Who will do said styles for you (ie. yourself, stylist, friend)?
---I'll do them myself

4) How often will you have to redo your style?
---weekly, but no more that a week and a half.  I work out a lot so I need to cleanse often

5) What will be your process upon changing styles (ie. shampoo washing/cond, DT)?
---my two-strand twists will turn into a twistout.  When that gets too old I will shampoo (ors olive oil or giovanni), deep condish (right now pantene hydrating curls with hot six oil and honey...that'll change when the bottle is finished but I don't know what I'll use next).  If I decide to henna (1X/month) I will wash, henna, then dt.

I used a good amount of Fantasia blue gel and tied it down with a scarf for a while.  After I felt that the gel had "set" in my hair, I took the scarf off and put the pony on.

My scalp is itching so badly it doesn't even make good sense.  I've spritzed it the past 2 days, but I'm taking the box braids down, as we speak, and will do the whole routine over tomorrow.  I'm not sure how to keep my scalp clean to last a week in these protective styles but I'd better figure out something quick!! This is just too much!!

What are you spritzing your hair with?  Are you putting anything on your scalp?

Hm, I thought I'd replied to this yesterday.  Weird.

MissT - I am not spritzing my hair with the most quality spray but I did mix some good stuff into it, I will definitely upgrade the spritz. (Motions Leave In with distilled water and peppermint oil added)

And I'm not putting anything on my scalp on a regular basis - will try that too.  I like jojoba on my hair so maybe that'll help my dry scalp...it's just such a mess to work with! Maybe coconut oil as the consistency will be much easier to work with.

If I could get my scalp issues under control I could wear my protective styles longer... :-\

So, I braid my hair in big braids at night and sleep on a satin pillow case.  In the morning I just take the braids out and wear a headband or bandana as a headband...is this considered a protective style? I assumed it was a braid-out once I started thinking about it...but...

NATuralinCO - You did respond but it was in another thread ;)  I would definitely count what you're doing as a braidout.  I'm not sure if it's considered protective if you re-braid it every night.  I'm new to this natural thing so I could be completely wrong, but I thought protective styles were meant to reduce manipulation so if you're braiding each night that might not count.

Hello ladies,
I tried washing my hair with my twists still in for the first time.  It didn't turn out too bad.  I didn't have any problems with matting.  It is a little fuzzy but not that bad.  I did it without a cap so next time I will probably try it with a cap to see if it gets rid of some of the fuzz.  Unless I have issues further down the road, I think this will be a big time saver for me during this protective challenge.

Hello ladies,

Just updating.  Washing with my style in place has been working for me.  I am currently wearing box braids which I washed for the first time last night.  Like my twists they got a little fuzzy but they held up pretty good.  I still haven't tried doing it with a cap yet, but I did try diluting my shampoo which helped it spread without over manipulating the braids and creating even more fuzz.  This has been a real time saver.  It took about 2 hours to do my hair including my deep condition ;D  It usually takes me about 3-4 hours just to braid/twist my hair.
